About BESA

The Biomedical Engineering Students’ Association (BESA) is your official BME student government.

All BME students are automatically BESA members. We represent the students’ interests here at BME, facilitate interactions with BME administration and University of Toronto. Part of your tuition fees go towards BESA – we subsidize and host exciting social, professional, cultural events.

BESA is an official student government and provides a link between the students, the Institute, and the Graduate Students Union.
BESA plans and organizes social, professional and special events for BME students, such as ski trips, sports games, live performances, career spotlights and more.
We also take the lead in planning the Toronto Biomedical Engineering (ToBE) conference, a showcase of graduate students’ work, with the assistance of the department.

Our Mission

The Biomedical Engineering Students Association is dedicated to serving the general interests and special needs of the graduate students of the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto. This will include, but not be limited to:

Representing the interests of the Biomedical Engineering graduate students to the University of Toronto’s Graduate Student Union, the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, the Engineering Faculty Council, the Governing Council of the University of Toronto, and any other representative or governing bodies as required;

Promoting the interests of our members to our own membership, to the University community at large, and to the general public;

Enhancing the Biomedical Engineering graduate student experience within the University of Toronto through organizing, promoting and engaging in social, academic and professional events and community initiatives;

Complying with the Canadian Human Rights Charter as well as the policies and by-laws of the University of Toronto and the Graduate Student Union (GSU).
